The first meeting in the month of February for Weyburn City Council will be held this evening at City Hall, and the agenda will be a busy one.

The mayor and councillors will be receiving the annual reports for 2021 from the Planning & Development Department and the Engineering Department. This will be in addition to the regular reports they will be receiving, such as the Water Treatment Plant Report, the Fire Department Report and the Public Works Report.

The council will also formally appoint Trent Lee as the new fire chief for the Weyburn Fire Department. He has been the interim fire chief since the start of the year.

There will be two tenders for equipment before the council. One is for a wheeled loader for the Public Works Department. The 2022 budget has $300,000 budgeted for the purchase of a new vehicle, and the Fleet Services Department will be selling the old loader, which is from 1998, at auction.

The other tender is for a utility work machine with attachments. This has a budget of $95,000 and would replace a machine from 2003.

With some work planned for the Weyburn airport, including repairs of cracking and heaving on taxiways B and C, as well as crack sealing on the main runway and repairs to the secondary runway, the council will look at an application for funding through the Community Airport Program. The funding, if approved, would cover 50 percent of the costs of these projects.

There will also be a development permit for a commercial recreation and personal service business on 1st Ave SE discussed and a home business application for 18th Street.

We will have full coverage of the meeting this evening on-air and online starting tomorrow morning.
