A 45 save performance from Cam Beson, and goals from three different players helped lift the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings to their second straight win of the preseason, as they beat the Estevan Bruins in Estevan 3-2 Tuesday night.

“The boys played pretty solid tonight,” said assistant coach Nathan Deck after the game. “A solid effort from our goalie Cam, there. He made some pretty big saves there and kept us in the game.”

Many of those saves came in the second and third period, as Beson managed to keep the puck out of the net at times it seemed destined to hit the twine. The second period was his busiest, as he faced 25 shots.

The game was feisty at times, as well, with the two teams combining for 104 penalty minutes. Weyburn made the most of the power-play opportunities they got, scoring twice, while the penalty kill managed to keep Estevan in check, not allowing a goal in nine chances.

The first goal of the game came just past the halfway mark of the first period when Elvis Slack scored his first of the preseason with 7:01 left on the clock. He was assisted on the power-play goal by Ty Mason, who recorded his third point in two games, and Jacob Kalin, who was making his preseason debut alongside Slack.

In the second period, the flurry of shots early in the frame caught up with Beson, as Caelan Fitzpatrick scored at the 4:26 mark to even things up 1-1. The two teams would trade chances for the rest of the period, but neither Beson nor Estevan netminder Cam Hrdlicka gave up any goals for the remaining time in the period.

Weyburn would jump out into the lead with two goals 2:05 apart in the third period. The first was by Kalin at the 3:14 mark. His power-play goal was assisted by Ian Maier and Braden Birnie. Then, Birnie would score a goal of his own, his second of the preseason, assisted by Connor Healy and Slack.

The Bruins would score a goal late in the period as Mark Rumsey beat Beson to make it 3-2.

The Red Wings will now prepare for their next preseason game this coming Friday at Crescent Point Place when they host the Yorkton Terriers.
