Pitching has been a strength for the Weyburn Iron Pigs all season, and once again, the pitching staff came through in a big way as the Iron Pigs beat the Regina Dodgers 6-2 at Tom Laing Park Tuesday night. The win evens up the best-of-three QVBL second-round playoff series at a game each.

Ethan Orsted had the start on the mound, and went the distance, striking out 12 batters in seven innings, while allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks. Orsted managed to pitch a strike on the first pitch to 19 of the 30 batters he faced in the game while throwing 117 pitches over the course of the seven innings.

At the plate, Weyburn was able to collect 10 hits, while also taking advantage of five errors committed by the Dodgers in the game. Patience at the plate also limited the Iron Pigs lineup to just striking out four times while also being walked eight times.

Will Morris was responsible for the first run for Weyburn, in the first inning, when he reached second base on an error on a pop-up, allowing Luke Niemegeers to cross home plate. Then, in the third inning, the Pigs added three more runs, starting with Niemegeers scoring on a wild pitch, then a line drive to center field by Kelton Hoium allowed Morris to score. The third run of the innings came as Troy Miller was walked with the bases loaded, bringing Hoium across the plate and making it 4-1 Weyburn.

After Regina scored in the top of the fourth, the margin was restored to three runs in the bottom of the fourth after an error by the Dodgers catcher on a steal by Morris allowed Niemegeers to score his third run of the night. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Adam Ziegler hit a double to right field that cashed in Cam Evans to make it a 6-2 final.

With the series tied at one game apiece, the third game will determine who advances to the next round of the QVBL playoffs. What is known is that the game will be played in Regina, but the date and time for the game have yet to be determined.
