May is National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in Canada and one local boy is doing what he can to raise awareness while collecting funds for research, healthcare and advocacy for better access to CF drugs.

More than 4,300 Canadian children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis attend specialized CF clinics.

Bennett Weger is no stranger to cystic fibrosis as his older sister Teresa was diagnosed with it when she was just two years old.

"This month Bennett has raised over $3500 already," told Mike Weger, Bennett's father. "Since we started fundraising as a family for Team Teresa we have raised over $500,000. This year, given the state of the economy, it is more about awareness than raising money but every donation, big or small does help."

"I think it's important to think about CF so people know about it," explained Bennett.

"Last year Bennett wanted to raise money for CF so he did a bottle drive," said Cara Weger, mother of Bennett. "So he donated bottles and cans and raised money that way. So he asked 'how am I going to raise money this year with Sarcan closed?' So that's how he came up with his roller blade challenge."

"I have done one hundred and ten kilometers total towards Team Teresa's goal of four thousand three hundred kilometers this month," Bennett exclaimed excitedly. "I am doing this because May is Cystic Fibrosis Month and I have a sister with cystic fibrosis. I have challenged all of my hockey friends to do four thousand three hundred shots on their net. I have done five hundred shots on my net so far."

Bennett has been playing hockey since he was four years old and currently at the age of nine plays for the Atom AA Wings.

He said that he has also been jumping on his trampoline and working on school work when he isn't busy with his CF challenges.

There are many ways that you can help Bennett out with his cystic fibrosis fundraiser. You can sponsor him whatever amount you choose for each shot he does on his net or for every kilometer he roller blades. Alternatively you can make a donation to his cause.
