The Southeast Cornerstone School Division has decided to appeal against the decision of the Court of Queen's Bench in the matter of Oberg v the Board of Educators. Wade Oberg is a teacher at the Division who was assigned duties as a principal but engaged in conduct which the Division deemed inappropriate and removed him from his role as principal. While he remained a teacher, the Queen's Bench decision reinstated him as principal.

The Southeast Cornerstone School Division says the decision, if not appealed, could have a significant impact on other boards in the province.

"Legal counsel for the parties will prepare documentation for the next stage of the Appeal. As is usually the case in matters of this nature, the process may take some time to complete," said Audrey Trombley, Board Chairperson with SECPSD in a media release earlier today. "During this time, Mr. Oberg will continue in his position as a teacher with the Division."

While Oberg remains a teacher in the Division, he is currently on leave.

"He engaged in conduct which the board believed warranted removing him from his role as principal," Trombley added in the release. "The board retained him as a teacher. The Queen’s Bench decision reinstated Mr. Oberg’s principal duties."

Oberg released a statement to Discover Weyburn earlier today as well regarding the SECPSD's decision to appeal. In his statement, Oberg expresses disappointment in the decision made by the Board.

“I am disappointed with the Board‘s refusal to acknowledge the mistakes that were made.  The appeal will cause me further financial and emotional hardship, and it delays my family’s ability to put this matter behind us. I am very grateful for the tremendous support of my community," Oberg state in his release. "I will vigorously defend the appeal and look forward to the Court of Appeal’s confirmation of the decision from the Court below.”
