It's a win that has to feel amazing for everyone in the Weyburn Red Wings organization. A superb team effort and some great goaltending led them to a 6–1 win on home ice in the annual New Year's Day game against Estevan.

Estevan rallied in the third but could not overcome a 4–1 deficit and the Red Wings added two goals late to seal a much-needed win. Coach Kyle Haines was recently named the head coach for the remainder of the season and he picked up his first career win as bench boss.

"It's a very special moment for me. I've played a long time and had some special moments but this ranks right up there," Haines said following the win. "I'm incredibly proud of the guys, it was a really good effort by everyone. I'm happy to have some family here to share this with me. It was a great team effort from the coaching staff all the way down to the guys. It's been a crazy couple weeks and to finally get a win sure feels nice."

Estevan struck first on a strange goal, which saw a dump-in by Isaiah Thomas redirect off a stanchion and into an open net. Cody Levesque came out to the play puck and an unfortunate hop ended up in the net. That would be the only shot to beat him — and you can hardly call it a shot.

Ben Hiltz got the Red Wings on the board and then set up the eventual game-winner to Jordan Kazymyra before the end of the first period, as the newly appointed top line of those two and Sean Olson played well for the second consecutive game. Hiltz would add another goal, his 17th of the season, to stretch the lead to 3–1 in the second period.

Then Cody Levesque took over. With the Bruins trailing, they turned up the intensity and generated some good scoring chances, but could not solve the Weyburn netminder. He made a pair of incredible stops on 2-on-1's, the second of which brought their crowd to their feet roaring in approval. It was definitely the 18-year-old's best game as a Red Wing.

"That was awesome. It's my first win since my first game, so it's nice to get that out of the way and now hopefully getting a few more," Levesque said with a smile post-game. "I felt pretty good, maybe a few of those saves were a little lucky but at the same time it's a good confidence booster for the team."

Defenceman Jevon Schwean scored his fourth of the season late in the period to extend the lead to 4–1 after 40 minutes. The Estevan onslaught continued, but Levesque once again shut the door.

The Red Wings found themselves in a bit of penalty trouble in the game, but some great battling and shorthanded play forced the Bruins to go 0–6 with the man advantage in the game. Everyone was blocking shots and doing their part to play a more complete defensive game.

Olson added an empty-netter followed by Drew Anderson's powerplay goal with 51 seconds left to put the game out of reach at 6–1. It was Anderson's first as a Red Wing and had to have felt good considering the circumstances. A six-game losing streak being snapped at the hands of their archrivals.

"I love beating those guys. I personally do not like them at all, but it was awesome to just get the win," Levesque said.

The win is the 11th of the season for the Red Wings who are now undefeated in 2019. Their busy week continues with a pair of games this weekend. First they'll host Melville on Friday night, before heading down to Yorkton for a meeting with the Terriers on Saturday.
