Landon Mosteller went the distance on the mound Sunday afternoon, giving up just two hits and two runs, as the Weyburn Beavers topped the Swift Current 57’s 6-2. The win is the fourth in a row for the Beavers, who are now 11-8 on the season, two games back of the Regina Red Sox for first in the East Division. The streak is also the longest current streak in the league.

The 57’s were the first on the board when they scored two runs in the second inning. Grant Van Scoy hit a home run to left field. That was followed up by Brett Esau, who reached base on an error, scored on a grounder to short. The Beavers were quick to reply, with Evan Weidner sending a fastball over the fence for his first home run of the season.

In the third, the Beavers added to the lead. Zach Frazier, not known for his speed, reached first safely on a bunt after the pitcher misplayed the ball. The next batter was Wade Weinburger, The freshman launched it deep to left field, giving the Beavers a 3-2 lead. Before the end of the inning, Brady Nygaard would bring home Ulysses Fluellen with a double to left. This would spell the end of the day for starting pitcher Fernando Pena. Lasting just 2 ⅔ innings, Pena gave up four runs on four hits, while striking out one. Taking his place was Trey Taylor, who closed out the inning for Swift Current.

In the 5th inning, Cam Williams would extend the Beavers lead with a single, scoring Luis Jimenez. In the 6th inning, Jimenez would collect a RBI when his double scored Brett Young. From there, the pitching of Mosteller took over to keep the 57’s at bay. Mosteller would strike out seven in the nine innings, while walking two, and giving up two hits and two runs.

The Beavers now prepare to head to Swift Current for a rematch Tuesday. Wednesday will see the Beavers play their final home game before they embark on the annual Alberta road trip.
