A quieter week for the Weyburn Police Service didn't see much action, but they did hand out their second ticket involving cannabis since legalization on October 17.

On February 28, Weyburn Police stopped a vehicle and it led to issuing a ticket for consumption of marijuana in a vehicle.

"Everybody knows you can't drive around and drink a beer in a vehicle," Deputy Police Chief Rod Stafford said. "While you may be allowed to possess marijuana, you certainly can't drive around and consume it in a vehicle — which would be smoking it. It mirrors the liquor regulations almost identically, and that was the case here."

The ticket, however, didn't result in a DUI. The driver was found to be under no substances, but one of the passengers in the vehicle was charged instead. Stafford is impressed with everyone's cooperation with the new laws.

Despite the smaller weekly report, he said everyone at the WPS is okay it.

"It was a quiet week, which we do appreciate," Stafford said. "We're still busy dealing with a couple of major files, so it's nice to have a bit of break from calls for service."
