A cause has been determined for a fire that occurred last Friday

Further investigation revealed the fire that broke out on the 200 block of Douglas Road was an overloaded electrical system. Reports have also determined the initial estimates on damages will be over $200,000.

The Weyburn Fire Department and Weyburn Police Service were on the scene of a fire alarm system activation on Tuesday evening.

They were dispatched to the Weyburn Housing Authority's Legion Towers on the 400 block of 6th Street.

The fire alarm system indicated there was a fire within the air intake system, and an investigation and inspection of the building found no concerns within the structure. Crews used positive pressure fans to clear the smoke out from within the building.

Further investigation determined a residence on the 400 block of 6th Street had been burning green leaves, which is in contravention of the Fire and Protection Services Bylaw, violating section 16 Open Air Fires. The excess smoke set off the alarm at the Weyburn Housing Authority's Legion Towers.

The City of Weyburn reminds residents that the burning of yard waste is prohibited under the Fire and Protection Services Bylaw. The Weyburn Fire Department has a reminder that trees, leaves, sod, and other garden waste are not to be burned within the city limit.
