On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Estevan, the Southeast Twins returned home for the first time in over a month.

The Midget AAA squad welcomed the league-leading Muenster Red Sox to Lynne Prime Park for an afternoon double-header and earned a split against the Red Sox.

The two teams played four games versus one another over the weekend after playing a double-header in Muenster on Saturday. The Red Sox won both games (12-3, 10-5).

Returning to Estevan, the Twins fell in the first game (9-1) before rebounding with an impressive (4-0) victory in Game Two.

Starting pitching would be the story in both games.

The Twins were only able to muster one hit off of Red Sox starter Brody Frerichs in the opener. Frerichs pitched a complete-game with six strikeouts to led his team to their 10th win of the season.

Twins starter, Carter Sorenson, was touched up for five runs in the first two innings. Then, he was able to settle in and keep the Twins in the game until hitting his pitch limit in the 6th inning.

"We just had a bit of a slow start in the first game and it would have been a different ball game if we were firing right away," stated Twins Head Coach Blaine Kovach.

In Game Two, it would be the Twins pitching that would be nearly untouchable.

Luke Niemegeers got the nod for the second game and did not disappoint. Though he did allow five walks, Niemegeers was able to get himself out of trouble with six strikeouts and solid defence behind him.

Niemegeers allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings before hitting his pitch limit in the 6th. With the Twins leading 1-0, Ryan Gaab came in to relieve his starter with two runners on and two out.

After allowing an infield single, Gaab struck out the next batter on three pitches to keep the Twins ahead 1-0. That would be key entering the bottom of the 6th.

Red Sox starter Thomas Lessmeister nearly matched Niemegeers pitch-for-pitch and got the first two batters out in the 6th. Then, the Twins rattled off back-to-back singles to chase Lessmeister from the game.

With two runners on and two out, Twins outfielder Nate Smart came up with his biggest hit of the season lining the ball back up the middle to score Talen King from second base.

Niemegeers would get a hit on the next pitch to load the bases for Kyler Phillips. With two out, Phillips hit a grounder that snuck by the second baseman scoring a pair of Twins and extending their lead to 4-0 after the 6th.

In the 7th, Gaab would get the first two batters out before walking the next two. With Frerichs, one of the top hitters in the league up to the plate, Gaab got the Red Sox hitter to fly out to right field to end the game.

"You don't shut these guys out very often, that's out of the norm for the Red Sox," expressed Kovach. "They're a really good team, but I'm very happy that we shut them down today."

"Everyone played their part in the win today, even if they didn't get the hit they're putting the ball in play and making things happen."

After the weekend, the Twins sit tied for 4th in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League standings with an 8-8 record. The Muenster Red Sox remain firmly in first place at 10-2.

The Twins play 10 of their remaining 14 games at home in Estevan. Their next action is on Saturday, June 4th on the road against the Swift Current Indians.

"I'll take all the home games I can get right now," added Kovach. "We'll be in tough at both Swift Current and Yorkton/Melville, but we're in a good position right now."

Then the Twins return to Estevan on Minor Baseball Day on Sunday, June 5th for two games against the Saskatoon Cubs.
