Despite 40 shots on goal, and goalie Jack Burgart stopping 34 shots without giving up a goal through 65 minutes of play, the Weyburn Red Wings came away from the first game of their three game road swing with a 1-0 shootout loss to The Battlefords North Stars, unable to solve starting Stars goalie Spencer Tremblay.

The Red Wings kept steady pressure on the Stars throughout the game, dominating puck possession. Quality shots were at a premium, however. On defense, the Wings kept North Star shooters to the outside, and were quick to get the puck out of the zone when they gained possession in the defensive end.

One highlight of the game came in the third period, when Red Wings captain Josh Lees dropped the gloves with Stars forward Adam Smith. Lees won the scrap, but under the rules now in effect in the SJHL, both players were given a five minute major and a game misconduct.

Both teams looked for any opportunity they could get to gain the upper hand through three periods, and the five minute overtime, but nothing could be settled before the shootout.

In the shootout, Jake McMillen was the first shooter for the Stars, and got the puck over the right shoulder of Burgart. That proved to be the winner, as Matt Eng, Drake Glover and Aidan Teilborg were unable to score for the Wings, and the final two shooters for the Stars couldn't beat Burgart.

With the loss, the Red Wings are now winless in 3, and haven't scored in two games. They will look to change that Saturday night when they visit the Kindersley Klippers. That game can be heard on AM1190, starting with the pre-game show at 7:20 p.m.


Three Stars
First Star - Spencer Tremblay - The Star goalie stopped all forty shots in 65 minutes, plus three shooters in the shootout.
Second Star - Jack Burgart - The 2nd year goalie for the Wings was unbeatable in net. He has now allowed only 1 goal in regulation in the past two games.
Third Star - Jake McMillen - The Stars forward scored the game winner in the shootout.
