The Weyburn Police Service dealt with a number of calls last week, and it resulted in 17 charges being laid under the Criminal Code, as well as quick intervention to prevent a tragic outcome.

Of the 17 charges, 11 of them were for failing to comply with conditions of release or failing to appear in court. It was explained by Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype the charges stemmed from either other interactions with police or compliance checks by the officers.

The WPS also helped to intervene in a suspected drug overdose. Officers responded to a scene where a man was going through an apparent overdose. A person on the scene administered Narcan, as did the responding officer. EMS also administered Narcan, and the person was able to regain consciousness.

In situations like that, Deputy Chief VanDeSype stressed people should not be afraid to call 911.

"In an instance like this, where it's a medical emergency, the police are responding, basically, to preserve life, so under the Good Samaritan Act, we are there to preserve the life and not in a criminal nature," explained the Deputy Chief.
