The City of Weyburn has become the first city in the province to raise a flag for the Metis Nation Saskatchewan.

"They had a proclamation and a flag-raising, so the flag-raising was done yesterday," said Public Relations Coordinator with the City.

He said the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Weyburn Local 87 want to create awareness about their local organization, and they're looking to encourage citizens to participate, to gain some more members.

Hoffart noted a number of dignitaries were in attendance for the event yesterday.

"The event was put on my Don La Foy, the president of Local 87, and he created this event and he had a bunch of speakers come and talk," he explained. "It was actually really, really great. We had Member of Parliament, Dr. Robert Kitchen, we had MLA Dustin Duncan, we had Minister of Health [for the Metis Nation] Marg Friesen, we had Chief of Police, Marlo Pritchard, and we had RCMP Brian Neilmeyer."

Hoffart added the flag was raised by the president of the Metis Nation Saskatchewan Glen McCallum, Don La Foy and Weyburn's Mayor Marcel Roy.

"It was an honour for them to ask us to do this, and it was great that they organized the event, and they had everything put in place for us to do, so of course we were going to say yes," Hoffart expressed.
