October is here and that means the Weyburn and District United Way is right around the corner.

The annual event supports 14 different members agencies that are active in the Opportunity City. Let's take a look at one of those member agencies; Sask. Abilities.

"Sask Abilities has been around since 1950 and we provide a variety of services to individuals throughout Saskatchewan, including employment services, rehabilitation services, residential programming and day time support," said Regional Manager Corey Hadden. "As well we have a really special place in Manitou Beach that's called Camp Easter Seal and that's a big reason we are involved in Communithon is because some of the funds from that assist in sending children, youth and adults with disabilities from Weyburn to Camp Easter Seal."

Hadden noted that Camp Easter Seals is the only completely wheelchair accessible and barrier free camp in Saskatchewan and funding from Communithon goes a long way in giving those living with disabilities the opportunity to experience summer camp.

"In addition to Camp Easter Seals, Sask Abilities is known for our work in supporting individuals that require special needs equipment as well as accessible parking permit....we are able to provide that service free of charge through our partnership with the Ministry of Health."

He added that anyone in need of support from Sask Abilities should visit their website.

Amy Weekes, Community Relations and Events Co-ordinator, added that there are lots of ways to get involved in Sask Abilities throughout the year.

"If people go on to our website, they can become a member and get newsletters to find out what's going on within the company and how they can support Sask Abilities," said Weekes. "As well there's lots of events throughout the year that go to supporting Camp Easter Seals. There's things all the time to get involved with."

To wrap up, Hadden shared a special message on behalf of Sask Abilities.

"Thank you is certainly a message we want to send," said Hadden. "We appreciate the support we've received in the past and certainly are anticipating more support going forward. The contributions people make in Communithon really are an investment in the needs of the individuals in the community so we want to extend our appreciation on behalf of those individuals."

Communithon runs October 19th.
