Its been a tough year on the Provincial Ministry of Highways budget for keeping the roads clean and clear.

Doug Wakabayashi, Assistant Director of Communications for the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure talks about costs so far this year

"As of the end of December that's three quarters through our fiscal year. We had spent about $19 million on snow and ice control, and that is about $5 million ahead of our five year average for the first three quarters of the year."

Wakabayashi says that the number of storms and the type of storms will determine how much money is spent.

Storms that produce ice conditions are more expensive to clear from the highways.
