The provincial government has named the two retail cannabis permit holders in Weyburn. One was awarded to Weyburn's Torrance Aitken, the other to Compass Cannabis Clinic out of Alberta and BC.

Dave Martyn is president of Compass. He shared why they applied in Weyburn.

"Saskatchewan had a unique system where you could choose the municipality to apply to. We had an interesting [reason]. One of our founders, who is my wife, was born in Weyburn, so it was the city that we had interest in from that side. Some family lives close to Weyburn, which we also found attractive," explained Martyn. "But as a market, we feel like smaller municipalities will be a good market for the business, ultimately."

His wife's maiden name is Brianna Keating, who lived in Weyburn for the first five years of her life.

Martyn said they applied for 10 retail cannabis permits in Saskatchewan and were lucky to get the one they got, as there were over 1,500 applications. The two permits for Weyburn are among 51 issued across the province. The permits themselves don't officially take effect until cannabis legalization occurs sometime later this year.
