The Midale Mustangs are behind the 8-ball in their best-of-5 Big Six quarterfinal series with the Wawota Flyers. The Flyers picked up an 8-3 win in Midale last night, giving them a 2-0 edge in the series.

Wawota jumped out to the lead in the first period, and never looked back. Flyers captain Rob West scored just before the halfway mark of the opening stanza, with Riley Riddell and Justin Lamontagne picking up the assists. The goal was followed up with Riddell scoring one of his own, with Dylan and Justin Lamontagne picking up the assists.

The Mustangs would get one back early in the second, as Braden Kmita solved Flyers netminder Guillaume Blouin, with brad Tomiski and Tyler Hoium credited with the assists. The Flyers wouldn’t be stopped, though, as they restored the two goal lead, then expanded it. Devin Stewart scored an unassisted goal, and Riddell notched his second of the game, assisted by Justin Lamontagne. The scoring continued to start the third for Wawota.

Kent Sauter scored 1:20 into the final frame, giving the Flyers a 5-1 edge. Steven Lindenbach would reply for the Mustangs, to try to start a comeback with more than 13 minutes on the clock. It wouldn't have much of an impact, though, as Justin Lamontagne would reply at the halfway mark, restoring the four goal lead. Kevin Lincoln then added one more for Wawota, assisted by Ryan Taylor. The Mustangs would score one more, as Adam Ziegler scored with just over five minutes left on the clock, but the five goal margin would come back with just over a minute left to play, as Taylor scored a goal himself, with West picking up the assist.

The Flyers will look to finish the sweep of the series when the two teams meet Friday night in Wawota. The game starts at 8:00 p.m.
