The search continues for a new head coach for the Weyburn Red Wings.

Team President Brent Stephanson explained they have been fielding applications from a number of highly qualified candidates, and the process for interviewing has started.

“We’ve gotten to a shortlist,” Stephanson said. “We had our first interview Wednesday; we’re doing another one the first part of next week, and then we’re doing two on Good Friday.”

The background of some of the candidates is fairly strong, Stephanson added. They range from applicants with coaching experience in the WHL to applicants with NHL playing experience, and more.

“It’s kind of a fun process talking to these guys, and learning a little bit about themselves and what roads hockey has taken them down, and just to see what’s the best fit for our club here is the biggest thing going forward.”

The goal for the team is to have the new head coach in place by the first week of May, second week at the latest. Ultimately, they want to have the coach in place for the start of the league meetings in June.

“We want to have that person in place for that for sure, because that where’s the scheduling is for next season, and gives them a chance to meet the other coaches, and governors, and the president of the league.”

The Red Wings started the process to hire a new coach after it was announced earlier this spring Kyle Haines will not be returning to the team in the capacity as head coach.
