The Weyburn Beavers have their backs against the wall in their best-of-five series with the Swift Current Indians. The Indians lead the divisional semi-final series 2-games to none, after a 12-9 win over the Beavers in Swift Current Monday night.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead, much like they did in game one. Ulysses Fluellen picked up two RBIs, while Corey Harrell brought Fluellen home in the next at bat, for Weyburn to go up 3-0.

Scott Beever, who had the start for game two, did his best to keep the bats of the Indians at bay. Along with the defence, he sat down the Indians in order. In the bottom of the second, though, Swift Current ended up on the board, with Bodie Cooper hitting a home run to lead off the inning. Swift Current would add another one in the third, when Liam Goodall brought home Shane Dokey with an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, the Beavers would add a few more runs to the board, when Andrew Urbistondo scored Jordan Anderson with a single to centre, and Dan Moro brought home Cam Williams with a single to left. That chased starting pitcher Christian Marquez from the mound, bringing in reliever Reece Calvert.

Swift Current replied in the bottom of the fourth with a single run, as Kyle Zirbes’ single brought in Alex Schultz. The bats for the Indians opened up in the bottom of the fifth though, as Swift Current pulled ahead. Bodie Cooper and Luis Rivas each had RBI singles, while Alex Schultz cashed in two runs with a triple, making it a 7-5 game in favour of the Indians. The outpouring offense also ended the night for Beever, who was replaced with Eric Morell. Beever finished his outing giving up ten hits in four and a third innings, while striking out five.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Beavers were looking to put together a rally to retake the lead, but a controversial call at second base, and subsequent ejection of Phil Curtis, put a halt on the process. Cam Williams had been walked as the lead off batter, and a double from Urbistondo advanced him to third base. While it had appeared that Williams touched the base, an appeal by the indians, and pick-off play at the base, resulted in Williams being called out for failing to touch the bag when he passed by. Curtis came out to argue the call, and while looking to be remaining calm, was ejected within seconds of beginning his conversation with umpire Trevor Drury when asking for an explanation of the call. It was the second game in a row that Curtis has been ejected from. While the Beavers were able to add a run in the inning, the Indians would jump back out with two more of their own in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 9-6 game.

A rally would materialize in the seventh inning for Weyburn, as Jordan Anderson cleared the bases with a single to centre field, making it a 9-8 game. That would be as close as the game would get, however, as the Indians used the bottom of the eighth inning to score three more runs, putting the game out of reach.

Game three of the best-of-five series is Tuesday night at Tom Laing Park. In the must-win game, the Beavers will be looking to first year pitcher Cole Feazell to earn the win. Feazell finished the regular season going 6-1 in nine starts. The last time Swift Current was in Weyburn, it was a 3-0 win for the home team. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
