Weyburn has a new youth council. It was appointed Monday night at the regular city council meeting. The youth council was established last school year, and sits in on Weyburn City Council in a non-voting role, bringing forth issues which concern the youth of the city.

Landon Field is the only returning member of the council from last year. He explained they met Wednesday night as a group for the first time.

“It was confirmed that I once again will be serving as the youth mayor, as well, we will be cycling through so everyone gets a turn to take a seat at the council and attend those meetings,” Field explained to Discover Weyburn.

The youth council will talk about a variety of issues, such as cannabis legalization, and what the city can do to provide more experiences for young people in the community. This year, they look to reach out to other youth councils which operate in a similar capacity to help grow the program.

The Weyburn Youth Council meets once a month and sits in on regular Weyburn City Council meetings throughout the school year.
