The Weyburn Humane Society has been a part of our community for almost 30 years now!!

And they rely 100% on donations and fundraisers just to keep their doors open every month.

So the Pet Valu store in Weyburn is continuing to support them (as they have many times in the past) with two different fun events that are running till the end of October!

"So our Thanks for Giving Donation Drive is what we run all October here at Pet Valu," Melanie Ror explained, Owner of the Pet Valu in Weyburn. "We collect product donations for the Weyburn Humane Society throughout the entire month. So when people are in the store and if they feel like making an extra donation while they're here then we're piling up a bunch of stuff that they are in need of over at the shelter. So we can give it to them when they need it. And early November is when we're going to pass everything off to them."

And you can also bring your own donation items in to Pet Valu and they will deliver them to the Weyburn Humane Society with all of the in-store donation items as well.

"They can drop donations in our donation bin that we have set-up here," told Ror. "When they are here shopping in the store is usually where they'll pick up an extra can of food, or a bag of kitten food, or whatever it is that the Humane Society is after. So they can grab it right here in the store or they're welcome to bring things that they need at the Humane Society to drop off. Like bleach and garbage bags, those kinds of things. But what they can get here in the store would be products that they would use at the shelter."

So why is the Thanks for Giving Donation Drive important to Pet Valu?

"The Thanks for Giving Drive is super important for us and the Weyburn Humane Society because lots of product donations get given to them during this time," Ror answered. "So we realy like to fill up their shelves as much as we can with all the things that they need on a regular basis. Like cat litter. They use a specific kind of cat litter and we have it here in the store. So instead of them coming in and buying what they need it's nice this month to be able to stock their shelves up for as long as possible. Thank you to everyone who makes a donation. We really appreciate it here in our store and the Humane Society is loving all of the stuff that they're getting from everyone who's donating in the community."

And there is a second fundraising event that Pet Valu is holding this month for the Weyburn Humane Society called Jail & Bail.

"Jail & Bail is a really fun event where we lock people up in a dog kennel here in the store," said Ror. "It's an oversized giant dog kennel that we have. But what happens is that people get locked up in there for about a half an hour or so. Or maybe longer if it takes them more time to raise their bail. So they set a donation amount that they want to raise for the Humane Society and then once they get their donations coming in they can be released from the jail."

And today Weyburn's own Police Chief Jamie Blunden was locked up with a bail/donation of $1000 that he set for himself.

If you are interested in taking part it is quite simple to do so and it won't take very much of your time.

"They can send us a message or give us a call here to get booked into the jail cell," Ror stated. "So we're looking for people who want to volunteer to sit in jail. And what happens is when you sit in jail, you basically give your friends a phone call and say ‘Hey, have you got $20 to donate? I'm trying to get out of jail and I need some help.' So if you're interested in being in jail we would love to have you get locked up and try to get out. You can even surprise somebody else and we'll come and arrest somebody that you want to be arrested too. So we can come down and pick somebody up with you and bring them down to our doggy jail cell."

Both fundraising events for the Weyburn Humane Society will be running till the end of October.
