This weekend, soccer players from Weyburn are off to Regina for the Queen City Challenge. While that is happening, work is being done on preparations for the Spring Soccer Showcase here in Weyburn, which kicks off next Friday.

Jason Roy is the president of the Weyburn Soccer Association. He explained they are expecting upwards of 40 teams to come to the city for the event, which runs from June 16th to 18th.

“Weyburn will be seeing teams coming from Saskatoon, Regina, Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Yorkton,” Roy said. “There’s going to be a lot. If you look at each team having, you know, 14 to 15 kids times 30 or 40, there’s going to be a lot of families coming into Weyburn that weekend.”

All of the games scheduled for the Spring Showcase are scheduled to be held at Jubilee Park and will include a number of age groups and skill levels, with the player development programs taking park.

“You might even see some of our community players kind of getting involved just to see what the player development programs are all about,” Roy explained. The age levels range from U9 all the way to U17, so some high-end soccer is expected to be played in the park.

Last year, the Weyburn Soccer Association held their Spring Soccer Showcase on the same weekend as the association’s family day. This year, they are separating the two events, with the Family Day being held on June 24 at Jubilee Park. The plan for Family Day is to wrap up the spring season while providing a lot of fun for the athletes.

For the Showcase, everyone is invited to come out and watch. There is no gate admission and passes to come to see the games are not required. They will be held throughout the weekend.
