Weyburn Police Service received seven reports of hit-and-run accidents last week.

“It seems like people aren’t paying attention when driving, or not paying attention enough,” said Constable Darcy Cleasby. “Whether it’s backing up and turning around in traffic, or whatever it is, they’re just not aware of their surroundings sometimes.”

He explained the best strategy for involvement in an accident.

"We encourage you to leave your name and number on the vehicle, so they can contact you,” he explained. “Or, better yet, call us. We can attend as well.”

He said usually there needs to be damage to a vehicle, a bodily injury, or a towable vehicle, for police to become involved, but they can officially attend any accident.

Sometimes, a witness is present when a hit and run occurs.

“If you see one happen, if you can do so safely, record the vehicle’s plates information, and call us and we can contact the people involved,” said Cleasby.

He said in some cases, the vehicle may not have enough damage for an insurance claim, but just in case it does, it’s still important to fully investigate the matter.
