The latest drug bust in the city may have ties to organized crime, according to the Weyburn Police Service.

"It's our position that wherever we have drug trafficking offences it's all tied to organized crime," shared Deputy Chief Rod Stafford. "Nobody deals in the drug world as a dealer in a vacuum."

"It's a food chain. You get the local dealer at the very bottom of it and the kingpin at the top, by definition it becomes an organized crime group then because there's various people in various levels of management as you go up. So, can we say it's this group or that group specifically? No we can't, at least at this time, but just in terms of a general definition we consider all drug trafficking offences related to organized crime," added Stafford.

The Weyburn Police Service Criminal Investigation Unit, Weyburn Police Service Patrol Units, RCMP Police Service Dog, and the National Weapons Support Team (NWEST) conducted an early morning search on a residence in Weyburn Thursday. The search led to the seizure of 210 grams of cocaine, $42,000 in cash, a vehicle and two arrests. A 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were taken into custody without incident.

The man, who is from Alberta, was charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of the proceeds of crime. The girl, who is from Weyburn, was charged with possession of cocaine. The man is in custody awaiting a bail hearing in Estevan Provincial Court on Monday. The girl has since been released into the custody of her family.
