For the past decade, Weyburn residents have spent this time of year getting ready for the annual Night Out for Cystic Fibrosis, hosted by Cara and Mike Weger. This year, however, the Opportunity City will be watching the Weger's fundraising from afar.
"I have said before that our desire to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research has made us do some crazy things and this will be one of them!" said Mike.
The Weger's 14-year-old daughter Teresa was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was two and a half. Since then, the Weger's have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for CF research. Last year they were honoured with the Mila Mulroney award to acknowledge their fundraising efforts.
This year Mike and Cara, along with their friends Tina Clay and Kim Maloney, will be involved in a fundraiser challenge that will see them participating in a hike to Machu Picchu in Peru.
"This is not a vacation but it will be an adventure," noted the Weger's. "Our goal is to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada just like we do every May. The goal set for each participant in the Trek to Machu Picchu is $4,200 but we don't want to stop at that amount."
To date, the four-member group has raised just shy of $19,000. Clay and Maloney arranged two separate Beer and Yoga events and a Plant Nite fundraiser. As well, the group arranged a Tenille Arts performance and raffle basket in December.
On top of the Machu Picchu fundraising, Team Teresa also had their major butter tart fundraiser in December. The team has raised roughly $19,000 which will be donated at the Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History in Regina on Sunday, May 26th.
The group will start their challenge on Saturday, May 25th and will travel by air, bus, and train and then start their hike.
