Cell phone coverage is being upgraded in 49 rural communities, according to SaskTel, as they launched 5G service in several areas. Of those communities that will see the upgrade, five are in the Weyburn area.

“Our government understands that advanced communication technologies and networks are an important catalyst for economic growth and improved quality of life for all Saskatchewan residents,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel. “I am pleased with SaskTel’s work to bring the next generation of wireless connectivity to the people of our province, including those living in rural and remote areas.”

The five sites in the Weyburn area are Halbrite, McTaggart, Midale, south of Milestone along Highway 39, and east of Midale along Highway 702.

In March, SaskTel announced they were committing more than $1.6 billion over five years on capital expenditures, including roughly $413 million for the current fiscal year. Part of the capital expenditures is investment in wireless technology and the fibre optic broadband infrastructure.
