While organizations around the world, in more than 150 different countries, deal with the after effects of the Wanna Cry ransomware incident, the Saskatchewan government announced Monday they were targeted by a cyber attack as well.

Occurring over the weekend, and into Monday morning, the government’s computer systems were hit by a DoS, or denial of service attack. It brought a number of the systems offline and even restricted internet usage by government computers.

In a scrum in the legislature yesterday, the deputy minister of Central Services, Richard Murray, said the incident didn’t affect any personal and private information. Within a few hours, the systems were back online, and regular operations resumed shortly after.

While there was some speculation the DoS was connected to the Wanna Cry incident, Murray said there is no evidence the two are connected. The situation is still being investigated to determine the cause, and the source, of the cyber attack.

The Wanna Cry ransomware, which came to the forefront on Friday, targeted computers using Microsoft Windows operating systems, in particular, those still using Microsoft XP. More than 230,000 computers were infected around the world and has been called unprecedented in scale. The attack encrypts the software on a computer and demands payment to have the files decrypted, or they will be deleted within seven days.
