Weyburn Police Service charged an impaired driver on Saturday. After being taken into custody and being given a breath test, police suspended the driver’s license and impounded their vehicle.

“We do, on occasion, end up doing vehicle checks with people that just shouldn’t have been driving. That was the case on this particular one,” said Deputy Police Chief Rod Stafford.

“The driver that was charged was three times the legal limit, which is ridiculous for anybody, never mind in this day and age with all the education that’s out there,” he added.

Stafford said that the vehicle is impounded for 30 or 60 days, depending on blood alcohol levels at the time of arrest. Licenses are suspended until the end of court proceedings.

“Those are both to kind of further drive home the point that this isn’t acceptable, it is going to cost you, if not by inconvenience, certainly financially,” he said.

“We continue to be very vigilant on impaired driving enforcement,” said Stafford, noting that Weyburn's impaired driving cases are lower due to the WPS "This Ride's On Us" initiative, which has made a big impact on the local impaired driving statistics.

He said that the service is less utilized in warm weather, since, for many people, it's easier to just walk home.
