Forty-one students from the Southeast College in Weyburn went into Thursday's Industry-Education Luncheon knowing very little.

To their astonishment, each student was awarded at least one bursary or scholarship with some students walking away with thousands of dollars.

The luncheon held at the Southeast College on Thursday afternoon was also about showcasing how the school's teachers are involving local industry in the classroom and also taking the classrooms out into the community.

"Good companies that are taking our students right into their shops and saying, 'This is how this things works, this is what you're going to see when you get out there and this is important and this is something we strive for,'" said vice president of strategic development, Jeff Richards.

Each scholarship and bursary was provided by either a community organization, business, individual or through fundraising events held by the college. President of the college, Dion McGrath, extended a heartfelt thanks to all the donors who made the event possible.

"I don't know if we could thank you enough, and we need to try to do more of that, because acknowledging what you do selflessly to give to our scholarship program and support the learners so that we can train them right here in Weyburn for the jobs that exist around Weyburn and in our region is the utmost importance for our board and for our college and hopefully for the learners who are recipients," McGrath said.

The Southeast College board also thanked the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship (SIOS) program which contributed $27,925 towards the $59,350 awarded in Weyburn on Thursday.
