It is a tradition that dates back to the 1930s.

The McLeod Series, a four-game total point basketball series featuring the senior boys and senior girls basketball teams from Weyburn Comprehensive School and Estevan Comprehensive School will tip-off for the 86th time next Tuesday.

The event started in 1932, when Norman McLeod, an MLA for the Estevan area, donated the trophy to what was then called the Estevan Collegiate Institute. Since then, the games have been played with a few breaks over the years. The most recent was in 2021 when the series was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, the series will be returning, with the first leg of the event tipping off in the Eagles Gym at Weyburn Comprehensive School.

The boys will take to the court first, with the first game being played at 5:00 p.m. The girls will then play at 7:00 p.m. The return leg of the series will be played in Estevan on February 16th.

Weyburn comes into the series having won the past three, capturing it at home with a 12 point margin, rallying back in the senior boys' matchup to erase a four-point deficit after the first three games of the event.
