Training camps for the new hockey season are just around the corner. Cordel Larson played the 2014-15 season with the Bantam AA Red Wings here in Weyburn and is now off to Spokane for camp with the Chiefs. He had a chance to speak with Discover Weyburn while at the airport waiting for his flight.

Training camp gets underway on August 23, and Larson is excited to finally get back on the ice.

"I'm looking for things to get started off on the right note. I had a good summer of training, and Spokane is a nice place. I'm looking forward to getting started," Larson said. "Spokane is a tremendous organization. They have a beautiful rink. When I played up a few games, the game is a little faster and a little more physical. A lot of my off-season training went into that."

The 17-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the Notre Dame Hounds of the Midget AAA league in Saskatchewan. Last year was his most productive, registering 40 points in 41 games. He also helped the Hounds win the national championship.

It's safe to say Larson enjoyed the taste of winning and wants to repeat the feeling at the next level.

"Winning the title kind of prepares you a little bit more. You experience the taste of winning, so you want to carry that on with you and hope you can bring that to the next team you play with," he said.

Larson speaks very highly of his time at Notre Dame and how they got him ready to make the jump the Western Hockey League.

"Notre Dame has prepared me in a huge way. You're training every day and working out really hard," he said. "The culture is kind of the same, it's very competitive. You're looking to push every day and get better."

Spokane is quite far from his hometown of Weyburn, but he doesn't seem too concerned.

"I'm a little nervous. But going to Notre Dame you're already away from home a little bit, so that prepares you. It helps Spokane is a nice place, so I should be ok," Larson said.

Training camp for the Chiefs wraps up on Sunday with the Red and White game. From there Larson will know if he'll be playing with Spokane for this season.
