The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings took to the ice Monday night for their only preseason game on home ice as they entertained the Regina Rebels at Crescent Point Place. The two teams would trade penalties for much of the night, but in the end, it would be the Rebels who came away with the win, skating to a 4-0 victory.

The game had a bit of an edge to it, with the two teams combining for 31 penalties, and 74 penalty minutes. Despite both teams getting plenty of power-play opportunities throughout the night, ultimately only two power-play goals were scored.

Regina’s first goal was scored 40 seconds in by Greta Henderson, then at the 6:40 mark, Allee Gerrard scored a power-play goal. Evangeline Hill notched an even-strength marker at the 8:42 mark. The last goal of the game was scored at the 3:29 mark of the third period, on the power play, by Alexis Petford.

Gold Wings netminder Hailey Sibbald, a rookie hailing from Beechy, stopped 35 of the 39 shots she faced in the game. Her counterpart at the other end, Payton Schlamp, turned aside 24 shots for the win.

The Gold Wings will now gear up for the Swift Current Showcase. The event is being held on the first weekend of October, ahead of the start of the regular season. The Gold Wings will play the Notre Dame Hounds and the Saskatoon Stars at the event.
