There is a Blood Donor Clinic today from 2 p.m. till 7 p.m. at Knox Fellowship Hall in Weyburn. They are located at 136 2nd St NE.

The Canadian Blood Services are currently running quite low on donations and can really use the community's help replenishing their stock.

"We have about a three day supply of O Negative blood and where we should be is about a five to eight day supply to meet the anticipated needs of the hospital," said Katherine Wasylynka, Territory Manager for Southern Saskatchewan's Canadian Blood Services. "The need for all blood types is constant, but O Negative is the rare blood type. We do have a perticular need for that because they can donate to anyone."

To donate blood for the first time you must be:

  • In good general heath, feeling well and able to perform your normal activities.
  • At least 17 years old.
  • Meet the height and weight requirements if you are between 17 and 23 years old. Use the chart below to determine if you are ready to donate.

How often can you donate?

It depends on the type of donation you’re making:

  • Every 56 days for whole blood for males, every 84 days for females.
  • Every seven days for plasma.
  • Every 14 days for platelets.

What greater gift is there than the gift of life? That’s exactly what every blood donation delivers. Blood and blood products are a critical part of everyday medical care including major surgeries, medical procedures, cancer treatments and managing disease.

Medical treatments can require quite a few donors. View the chart below for an idea of how much blood each patient may need.

So make a difference and donate blood today. Also, there will be another Blood Donor Clinic in Weyburn in November.
