Saskatchewan Agriculture is reporting a slow start to seeding in southeast Saskatchewan this year.

According to the provincial crop report, three per cent of the crop is in the ground in the Southeast, compared to the five-year average (2012-16) of seven per cent for this time of year.

Work in much of the region has been delayed because of wet field conditions, but you can expect to see more farmers in the fields when the weather warms in the coming week.

"The wet weather and (snow) have kind of delayed things but fortunately in the Weyburn area there wasn't much rain reported this past week so, that's been good," said Brent Flaten, integrated pest management specialist at the Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Moose Jaw.

The Frobisher area reported 7 millimetres of rain, the Lampman area 9 mm, the Broadview area 11 mm, the Weyburn area 10 mm and the Odessa area 5 mm.

The Weyburn area has also been fairly good as far as cropland topsoil moisture conditions; 70 per cent is adequate while 26 per cent is surplus moisture. The Northeast and West Central parts of Sask, higher surplus moisture

Farmers are now busy seeding, working fields, calving, fixing fences and controlling weeds.
