The Weyburn Police Service responded to 98 calls for service last week. Of those calls, there would be 27 charges laid under the Criminal Code. A good number of those charges were for an all too common reason.

“I’d say the majority of them are going to be individuals that had a condition of their release, and basically violated that condition of their release, whether it was curfew, or staying away from someone or failing to appear in court when they are required to appear in court,” explained Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype.

Just one traffic stop would result in four charges for a man. The police had received reports of an erratic driver.

“There was actually a couple of concerned motorists that witnessed this individual driving very erratically,” VanDeSype described of the calls. “One of the callers into the police had indicated they were nearly hit by the vehicle. Officers were able to locate it based on the description that was provided.”

The driver of the vehicle was arrested, and as a result of the investigation is now facing four charges.

“Ultimately they found the driver to be impaired by alcohol, as well as he was prohibited from driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and because of his driving actions he was charged for dangerous driving as well,” VanDeSype added.

The matter is still under investigation, as the vehicle is believed to have collided with some property before being stopped by police, and there could be further charges.
