Reaction to the results of Monday’s federal election is coming from all parts of Weyburn.

Twila Walkeden is the executive director of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.

“The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, we’re looking at those election results from last night, and there’s no escaping the fact this is a country divided,” said Walkeden when asked for her initial thoughts on the results. “We see the western provinces certainly hold a different opinion on who is best to lead Canada, so we’re looking at a minority government led by Justin Trudeau, and it will be interesting to see what that yields.”

Unlike some, Walkeden doesn't think the defeat of Ralph Goodale will have an impact in the province, as the provincial government is a strong voice to push for the province. Goodale was the lone Liberal MP from Saskatchewan prior to the election.

The riding of Souris Moose Mountain appears to have had the largest margin of victory in the country, as Dr. Robert Kitchen captured 85 percent of the vote.

“I think that just goes to show that there are people in this riding who are concerned over both market access for our resources, and the agriculture and global market situation, so you know, that seems to be the party that’s putting the most emphasis on those two things, and those are the two aspects that drive our local economy.”

Walkeden also pointed to the voter turnout for the election. Here in Souris-Moose Mountain, 77.33 percent of the 51,957 eligible voters cast a ballot in the election.
