This past Sunday the Weyburn Terry Fox Run for cancer research took place at River Park.

The day started off with cold winds and rainfall, but that didn't stop the event from taking place.

Unfortunately the scheduled massage therapy students and entertainers were unable to attend due to the periodic rain and cold temperature.

Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy was there to cheer on all of the attendees and to support the event.

Terry Fox was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated six inches above the knee in 1977.

While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope. He ran close to 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada’s Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened.

Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age 22. The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

To date, over $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

At this year's Weyburn Terry Fox Run more than $2000 was raised, which is quite incredible considering the poor weather we had.

The highest donations in Weyburn this year came from Jaycee Watson and her birthday party that brought in $365. For their amazing efferts they were presented with $50 in coupons to Weyburn's Boston Pizza.

The second highest donation came from Happy Feet Weyburn, who donated $330 from their registration fees to the Terry Fox Organization.

And Carol Spencer won the prize for most years attending with a whopping 37 years!!! For all of her years of raising funds for cancer research she was presented with $100 to Boston Pizza. With which she replied, "Thank you so much, I don't know how I'm going to eat all that pizza, but thanks a lot."

Thank you so much to all of the community for their support and a special thank you to Giant Tiger for donating nutritional snacks for the runners and volunteers, as well as the Weyburn Pharmasave for donating all the water to keep everyone well hydrated. Photo gallery from the day below.
