City crews will be getting out on to the roads to start recapping streets around Weyburn. City council passed the bylaw Monday night to approve five projects around the city. Initially, there were eight projects slated for the year, but petitions by homeowners blocked three of the projects.

"When we're doing a local improvement, the people that are going to be affected, or are abutting the work, have the opportunity to petition against the work if they don't want to see it, because they'll be paying for a portion of it," explained City Manager Bob Smith.

The three stretches of road that will not see an crews this year are Coteau Avenue from 7th Street to 8th Street, 5th Street NE from Prairie Avenue to Bison Avenue, and 5th Street from Bison Avenue to Coteau Avenue.

The remaining five projects will go ahead. Those projects include Prairie Avenue from 4th Street to 6th Street, 5th Street from 1st Avenue N to Prairie Avenue, Coteau Avenue from 8th Street to 9th Street, and Government Road S from Highway 39 to 1st Avenue S.

As part of the same bylaw, city council approved sidewalk replacements in two locations. The sidewalks on the north side of Park Avenue, from Ashford Street to 13th Street will be replaced, as will the sidewalks on the north side of Douglas Road from Elks Park to Frontage.

In total, the work will cost $307,545.84. That amount is shared between the city, and the benefiting landowners. Landowners contribute to the work as part of a special assessment. For the street recapping, a landowner can choose to pay $99.21 per frontage meter before December 31st, or they can pay $23.71 per frontage meter per year over the next five years.

When it comes to the sidewalk repairs, the special assessment rate will be $302.40 per frontage meter, or $41.57 a year over ten years.

For both projects, the lifetime of the work is estimated to be ten years.
