One traveller coming into Canada at the North Portal port of entry earlier this month found themselves in a little hot water.

The Canada Border Services Agency said that officers at the border crossing seized two non-restricted firearms, one restricted firearm and five cartons of cigarettes at the port on February 4th. The traveller was arrested, fined and released.

The CBSA is reminding travellers to always check what they can and cannot bring across the border. All firearms must be declared at the border crossing when entering Canada to avoid the possibility of penalties, including seizure or prosecution. For tobacco, visitors coming into Canada can bring up to 200 cigarettes free of duty and taxes.

CBSA officers in the Prairies region seized over 400 weapons, including 77 firearms and 241 miscellaneous parts for firearms, in 2023. There were also 1,767 seizures of illegal narcotics at border crossings across the prairies last year.
