While the Weyburn Red Wings were idle Thursday night, there were still four preseason games in the SJHL. Three of those games saw teams from Saskatchewan taking on teams from Manitoba, while one game was played in a neutral site.

Waywayseecappo 5, Yorkton 1

The Yorkton Terriers, looking to rebound from their loss to the Red Wings Wednesday, played host to the MJHL’s Waywayseecappo Wolverines Thursday night. Discipline would prove to be the undoing for the Terriers, as they gave up five power-play goals in the 5-1 loss.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the game with an even-strength goal from Evan Sare. The goal would be all the offence Yorkton could muster, however.

Wayway wasn’t able to break their goose-egg until the last second of the second period when Jack Kennedy scored on the power play.

In the third period, the game started to get away from the Terriers, as the Wolverines scored four more power-play goals, with four different players responsible. Matthew Swanson, Noah Westgate, Kieran Thiessen and Charlie Kashmark all scored in the final frame.

Kindersley 3, La Ronge 4 (SO)

The La Ronge Ice Wolves opened up their preseason on the road Thursday. They travelled down to Saskatoon where they met up with the Kindersley Klippers at Hamm Memorial Arena for the first of two exhibition games between the two teams.

The Ice Wolves would take advantage of the power play to come away with a 4-3 win in a shootout.

While Kindersley opened the scoring early in the first period, La Ronge replied to tie the game up shortly past the halfway mark of the first when Bryce Trimmer scored with the man advantage. The first of two goals on the night from Dylan Thackeray in the second period was also a power-play goal, giving the Ice Wolves a 2-1 lead.

After the opening goal from Caden Benson, the Klippers didn’t see any more goals on the board until Austin Nault scored late in the second period, tying the game at 2-2.

La Ronge would again take the lead with Thackeray's second goal of the game, before Tyler Traptow scored moments later for Kindersley, making it a 3-3 game. After five minutes of overtime, nothing was solved, and the Ice Wolves would pick up the win in the shootout.

Flin Flon 3, Swan Valley 5

The Flin Flon Bombers, after losing 6-3 to the Swan Valley Stampeders at home Wednesday night, looked for revenge Thursday as they played out the second half of the home and home series with the MJHL squad. The Stampeders, however, had other plans, skating to a 5-3 win over Flin Flon.

The Bombers did take the lead in the game, with Caleb Franklin scoring in the first period. The goal was unassisted and came while shorthanded.

The lead for Flin Flon lasted until the second period, when the Stampeders would score a shorthanded goal of their own, coming from the stick of Frazer Dodd. Then, it was followed up with a power-play goal by Josh Maucieri to make it 2-1. The lead was extended to 3-1 when Caleb Packhouse scored for Swan Valley.

In the third period, Flin Flon scored to pull within one when Mason Martin found the back of the net. It was followed up with the game-tying goal coming on the power play from Donovan Houle.

The deadlock remained in place until late in the third period, when Maucieri scored his second goal of the game for the Stampeders. An empty netter by Dodd would seal the deal, giving the Stampeders their second win in as many nights over the Bombers.

Melville 5, Dauphin 2

The Melville Millionaires hit the road Thursday, travelled across the provincial border to take on the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings. The Millionaires would come back to Saskatchewan with a victory, skating to a 5-2 win.

The Millionaires were led by Luke Spadafora. He finished the night with a goal and two assists.
