The Weyburn Beavers baseball team was busy giving back to local children in the month of June through their "Giving Back to Schools" program.

"That's where our players go into classrooms through the month of June and sometimes help with in-classroom stuff and then sometimes in a more phys-ed setting, too," explained Beavers President Garnet Hansen.

Beavers players give a quick lesson to the 10th player Wednesday night. The 10th player gets to throw the first pitch.

The program led to the highest turnout yet this season for a home game, when school children participating in the program received free passes to the game Wednesday night, with 713 fans attending.

Hansen said it's been a number of years since the "Giving Back to Schools" program has had a sponsor but this year they got lucky.

Students and sponsors involved in the "Giving Back to Schools" program thanked the team during school appreciation night Wednesday.

"Penta Completions is actually a company based out of Estevan but they have staff that live here and they actually contacted our organization looking for some sponsorship options and we offered this program up and they took us up on it," shared Hansen.

The Beavers have also done a school program and kids camp in Radville. Hansen said the programs are a unique experience for children, who get to meet players from all over North America, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

The Beavers made 10th player of the game Sonja Plemel feel comfortable throwing the ball before her pitch in front of 713 fans.
