The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the post-season for the first time since 2016.

Powered by a strong pitching performance from Hyun Jin Ryu, and a crucial home run from Vladimir Guerrero Jr, the Blue Jays picked up a 4-1 win over the New York Yankees as the teams closed out a four-game set at Sahlen Field Thursday night. The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Blue Jays.

Guerrero Jr’s home run came in the second inning. His eighth of the season was a solo blast with one out off Yankees starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. Designated hitter Alejandro Kirk came up with a clutch hit in the game, as he doubled in the sixth inning that brought in two runs. The other run from the Jays was courtesy the bat of Bo Bichette, who cashed in a run with a double in the third.

Ryu pitched seven innings of shutout baseball for Toronto. He struck out four in the appearance while walking two. Reliever Anthony Bass would have a rough outing in relief, allowing one run, and walking three, in 2/3 innings of work.

Rafael Dolis came on for the save, striking out the side to secure the win.

With their first playoff berth since 2016 now in the bag, the Jays still have the rest of the 2020 season to finish up. They will be hosting the Baltimore Orioles for a three-game set, starting Friday.
