Leaves budding on trees. Green grass growing. Songbirds singing in the trees. City crews working in the parks and greenspaces around Weyburn. All are signs spring has arrived.

A number of popular activities are back in swing this year, starting with the tennis courts opening last week. For those who want to channel their inner Milos Raonic, Linda Prokott, the parks coordinator with the City of Weyburn, explains it is on a first come, first serve basis.

“They can stop by the leisure centre at the front desk, and they can either sign out a key for the day, or they can also purchase one for $25, and then they can access them whenever the like,” Prokott said.

The disc golf course is also making a return to River Park this year. Installed last summer, it proved to be a popular addition to the ever-growing list of outdoor activities in the city. Residents can play the course with their favourite flying disc on the nine hole course. The blue and white baskets dot the park, and are set up for this year.

With spring here, many are turning their thoughts to getting away for a camping trip. Many who come to Weyburn, or even just passing through, will stop for a few days at the River Park campground. Prokott said crews have been taking care of some spring cleaning in the park, getting it ready for it’s opening.

“The official date is the May long weekend, but weather dependent we will sometimes open up a week or two earlier,” Prokott told Discover Weyburn.

There will also be a new addition to the accessible playground, located in Elks Park on Douglas Avenue. A specialized swing is set to be installed, made possible by a grant the City of Weyburn received for the project.
