The Government of Saskatchewan announced this week under-utilized government buildings could be sold to raise funds for the province. Central Services Minister, Ken Cheveldayoff has said there are 660 government-owned buildings across 150 communities to be looked at.

Marcel Roy, Mayor of Weyburn, suspects Weyburn's Courthouse could be included but has not yet heard if this is the case.

"No one has really seen what the list is. They are talking about looking at under-utilized properties that they are going to disperse. We see they are looking at talking to Regina about the Hub and selling that off to Regina."

The Weyburn Courthouse was originally built in 1928, the year before the beginning of the Great Depression. In recent history, it was renovated in 2009-2012 costing around $8 million.

"It could even have been as high as $10 million they put into it," said Roy and added there is a discrepancy on the exact amount.

If the City of Weyburn is approached by the provincial government to purchase the Courthouse, Roy said it doesn't make sense for the City of Weyburn to purchase it but that it also doesn't make sense for the government to have spent so much money to renovate and upgrade only to close it down.

He also wonders what would be done with the building if somebody were to buy it privately.

The Courthouse is only used for Provincial Court on Tuesday after the Queen's Bench in Weyburn was closed in 2016.
