Local fibre artist Jaynie Himsl received an award in Saskatoon last month. The award, which was for Excellence in Quilting, was presented during the reception gala at the end of May, for the Saskatchewan Craft Council's 'Dimensions' Exhibition reception.

Himsl said the award was unexpected.

“There's awards for different categories, pottery, metal, sculpting, plus some recognition for outstanding overall, and one for quilting as well, which I was very surprised and pleased to have received,” she said.

The award was sponsored by the Sasktoon Quilt Guild.

“An award isn't necessarily presented each year in each category, so you never know. It's a professional level, they take professional fees, and likewise the work shows. It's all very fantastic work in that show.”

Himsl said she does her work for the enjoyment of the craft and doesn't work at it professionally by doing commission pieces. She noted that while she did get to rub elbows with some notable, professional crafters, she most enjoys her monthly meet-ups with other local fibre artists here in Weyburn.

“There's a handful of us, say half a dozen,” shared Himsl. “We have an informal group here with women that meet once a month, and we just get together at one anothers’ houses, and chat, show off our work and get inspired from each other.”

Himsl was one of 35 crafters chosen for the exhibit, which runs until July 6th at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery in Saskatoon.
