Could Weyburn be getting a fieldhouse? The conversation was once again raised at Weyburn City Council Monday night, after a report was tabled by the Facilities committee.

At the most recent meeting of the committee, on May 9th, they discussed the options of building such a facility. A motion, moved by city councillor Brad Wheeler, called for city council to authorize an engineered conceptual plan to optimize Jubilee Park as a multi-use, multi-generational facility.

The commission also discussed the two options in building such a facility - going about it as a stand-alone facility, or entering a partnership to build a fieldhouse with future phases for a pool and sports field within Jubilee Park. There was no recommendation made on that aspect of the fieldhouse included in the report.

There was no action taken by council at the meeting Monday evening. It is expected to be brought forward in the coming months, along with an outline on how discussions with possible partners will be handled. There was a lot of optimism about the project, especially from Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy.

“We are going to get a new school here within the next two to three years, and we believe we could field a fieldhouse attached to it,” Roy said after the meeting. He also iterated the city would be in control of the fieldhouse facility.
