For those who are looking to travel to the United States, non-essential travellers will again be allowed to cross the border by land starting November 8th. The announcement was made by American officials on Friday.

The news is welcome for many in southeast Saskatchewan, including the MLA for Weyburn-Big Muddy, Dustin Duncan.

“It’s one step closer to returning to what normal was like, and what normal is going to look like in the future,” Duncan said. “Not only for commerce and how closely our two economies are linked but also from a societal perspective.”

Duncan pointed out there are a number of people who have personal contacts and various types of relationships with people on the other side of the border. Having those cut off due to the border closure has been tough on many, but soon, they will be able to cross the line.

Non-essential travellers who are looking to go to the United States will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. For those who cross by land, there will be no requirement for a negative COVID-19 test upon entering the United States. A negative test is still required for entry into Canada.

“Any news that we’re starting to get closer to getting back to normal is certainly good news,” Duncan added.
