Bicycle riding is a fun and healthy means of transportation, however, ensuring you are riding safely is the key to this enjoyable activity.

The Weyburn Police Service wants to remind cyclists that there are many things to consider when taking your bicycle out in Weyburn.

"Always ride single file on the right-hand side of the road is one that I often see here in Weyburn while out on patrol is people often riding their bikes on the wrong side of the road," says Constable Jeff Bartsch of the Weyburn Police Service. "Another big one too for people to be aware of is to use the proper arm signals when turning or changing lanes in traffic."

When a bicycle is driven in traffic it is considered to be a vehicle and should follow all the rules of the road. If you plan on using crosswalks as a pedestrian a reminder that you must dismount from the bike and walk it across these designated areas.

Simple tips like wearing a helmet and looking both ways before crossing the street are also extremely important. The Weyburn Police Service also reminds people to always be aware of your surroundings.

"When approaching a parked vehicle be aware of car doors or people exiting that vehicle," says Constable Bartsch. "Never wear headphone while cycling as music often drowns out noise of traffic, to wear reflectors, head lamps, and rear lights and also to wear visible clothing when cycling at night."

Before taking your bicycle out on the road be sure you are properly prepared for the ride and that you keep safety in the front of your mind.
