The Weyburn Police Service had another busy week from August 30th until the end of the Labour Day weekend that resulted in a total of 20 charges being laid.

Of those charges, 14 were traffic-related and five were under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Two of the 14 traffic charges were for using a cell phone while driving and seven were related to speeding. There were also several warnings given out during the week.

Local Police showed an increased presence with the school year beginning for many as officers focused on pedestrian and traffic safety in the school and recreational areas.

On Monday, August 30th a resident reported his white truck had been struck and damaged sometime during the night while parked on the street in front of his home located on Prairie Avenue.

"All we can say is that there is damage to the driver's side of the vehicle and there are some remnants of paint, either an orange or yellow color left behind," explained Deputy Chief Brent VanDeSype. "It is kind of odd-looking damage that possibly could have been from a piece of work equipment or something like that. It is strange."

He asked for anyone who heard or saw anything that night to please reach out to the Weyburn Police Service at (306) 848-3250.

Following a reported incident on Sept 1st, an adult male faces several charges including a charge of Assault with a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and Failing to Comply with a Probation Order.

"One individual attended our office and reported an assault," VanDeSype stated. "Charges have been laid but the male has not been located yet so there is a warrant out for his arrest. So hopefully we locate him soon."

During patrol, officers noticed two individuals walking along the highway near Weyburn. While speaking to the individuals the officers discovered that one of them had an outstanding warrant for their arrest.

"They stopped to have a chat with them more for safety reasons more than anything," shared VanDeSype. "But while talking to them they realized that one of them had an outstanding warrant out of Regina. So they did execute the warrant and released them for a court date in Regina."

A traffic stop conducted Friday evening resulted in an adult male being charged with impaired driving.

"There were indications that the driver was impaired and further testing resulted in him blowing over the legal limit and he was charged accordingly," VanDeSype told.

Weyburn Police received a complaint of an individual falling victim to an online/phone scam resulting in a loss of a significant amount of money.

"Unfortunately this is one of those where they do mass emails or phone calls saying you won the lottery and one individual did fall for the scam," said VanDeSype. "He was instructed to send them some money so his winnings could be released to him. Unfortunately, there was money sent out in this case and it was a scam. So there was no winning."

"If it sounds too good to be true then it most likely is too good to be true. You don't have to pay anything to get a prize or a lottery win. Do not send any money to anyone without knowing for certain what it's for and that it's legit."

Officers also responded to a variety of other calls involving domestic disputes, family relations, mental health, alarms, and general wellbeing checks.

Anyone with information regarding one of these matters, or any other matter of a criminal nature, is encouraged to contact the Weyburn Police Service at (306) 848-3250, the local RCMP Detachment at 310-RCMP (7267), or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
