The Weyburn Beavers wanted to ensure their head coach, Phil Curtis, had a happy birthday. They gave him one of the best presents they possibly could, as they doubled up the Lethbridge Bulls 6-3 at Tom Laing Park. The win is the third in a row for the Beavers, who have also won eight of the past ten.

Weyburn jumped out to an early lead before the Bulls caught back up. In the second inning, Jesse Hilyard hit the ball over the fence in left-center field for his fifth home run of the year.

It was the third consecutive game Mosteller has given up a home run in the second inning, before going on to earn the win on the mound. In all, his night was a good one, going seven innings, while striking out four and giving up two earned runs.

The Beavers broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning when a Brett Young double brought home Ty Scott. For Young, bringing the run in had a little extra meaning, as he was playing in front of his parents, who had made the trip in from Lodi, California.

“It just means a lot to me. I’ve never been made to Canada before, and my family is up here, supporting me, it’s huge,” Young said after the game.

One more run was added on in the inning, as Luis Jimenez continued to generate runs. He brought in Neil Ring after hitting the ball to second base, forcing the decision to give up the run, instead of the base runner.

The score held until the sixth inning when a double from Zach Mathis to right field brought in Ring, Young, and Jimenez.

Lethbridge would add two more runs through the rest of the game, but weren’t able to generate any momentum to close the gap. In the ninth inning, they did threaten. The Bulls got a base runner on with two outs when Dylan Flasch hit a pop up to the gap between shortstop and left field. Evan Weidner back-pedalled to make the catch and looked to have dropped it, but he got his body in the way and prevented the ball from touching the ground. The circus catch ended the game.

The Beavers will now look to clinch a playoff spot when the two teams meet again Tuesday night. Weyburn has a magic number of one and will secure the postseason berth with either a win or a Melville loss.

The game starts just after 7:00 p.m., at Tom Laing Park.
